IIMUAHII was given a Buddhism inspired theme for our collaboration with MCZ Japanese pop group, also known as Momoiro Clover Z. This type of work was pretty novel to the team, but when offered the job we gladly accepted the challenge. “ It was so fun working on a project that couldn’t have been more remote from my customary style”, says Elena. “ This costume series was a step forward for me experimenting in costume design, and given the cultural dissonance between myself and the guidelines for this project, it was refreshing to work on something so far outside my traditional design aesthetic”. Upon brainstorming various inspirations to help fuel the silhouettes and architecture for the collection, ancient temples from Cambodia caught Elena’s eye.
These vast, majestic, shapely formations gave birth to the overall design concepts used in our work for MCZ. Once all the sketches and textiles were prepped and ready for production, the entire construction process ran quite smoothly. Performance fabrics are Elena’s favorite to work with, so, drafting a baseline for the garments was pretty straight forward. Then came time for the sequin and headpieces, we took in a deep breath and began gluing. Have to admit the whole process was a bit tedious and time consuming, but we can happily report fabricating the headwear was nothing IIMUAHII couldn’t handle with the help of our awesome interns, a good cappuccino, and Kelly Rowland’s “Motivation” on repeat.
For the first time ever we are sharing the process! (Click photos to enlarge.)

AND one of our favorite parts of the process, FITTINGS! (Our fit model Mindy was certainly shocked at what we had in store for her to try on!)
AND our most favorite part of the process, THE END RESULT:
We want to thank MCZ and King Records Japan for including us in this majestic collaboration. Momoiro Clover Z’s new single “Gounn” is due out November 6th, 2013, we recommend everyone to go and explore the world of MCZ! We did and we are hooked!
